MOSSO Update 5/4/2023: The Springfield Symphony Orchestra (SSO) today announced in a joint statement with Local 171 of the American Federation of Musicians that they have reached a labor agreement with musicians on a two-year collective bargaining agreement. The new agreement starts in the upcoming 2023-24 season and extends through the following season.
The new labor agreement guarantees six Classical concerts and two Pops concerts, a total minimum of eight concerts, for the coming two seasons. If additional funding can be identified, other community and educational concerts will be produced as well.
Musicians will receive a raise over each of the two years of the contract and the agreement calls for an average of 64 musicians at each of the Classical concerts.
As part of the agreement, a pending unfair labor practice complaint by the musicians’ union registered with the National Labor Relations Board will be dropped by the musicians.
In a separate agreement with the union, MOSSO - the Musicians of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra, the organization formed by musicians, will transition into a newly named entity to be called the Springfield Chamber Players (SCP). The SCP will assume the role of creating chamber music concerts, including the long-standing Longmeadow Chamber Series, and provide outreach that will bring elements of the Springfield Symphony to the community. Under the agreement, the SCP will not compete with the SSO on fundraising. The SSO will continue to produce full symphony concerts and chamber orchestra opportunities.
About the agreement, Paul Lambert, President & CEO of the SSO, said, “This is a great day for Springfield and for the Springfield Symphony Orchestra. For the SSO to survive and thrive we need all parties working in harmony and in the same direction to bring this magnificent music and our talented musicians to the entire community. The agreement will result in the SSO and our musicians working together to grow our audience and build the philanthropic and business support we need in order to be sustainable.”
According to Beth Welty, President of Local 171, “The SSO musicians are very happy to begin a new chapter in our beloved orchestra’s history. Local 171 of the American Federation of Musicians, which represents the SSO members, congratulates all involved for their hard work in securing this new agreement. The musicians are eager to collaborate with the board and SSO staff, under the inspired leadership of Paul Lambert, in order to realize our shared dream of an orchestra that fully serves Springfield and Western Massachusetts. The SSO belongs to everyone and we are committed to making our music available to all.”
MOSSO Update 2/1/2023: We are thrilled about the appointment of Paul Lambert as President and CEO of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra. We congratulate him and wish him all the best for years to come!
MOSSO Update 1/31/2023: The National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) has once again issued a complaint against the Springfield Symphony Orchestra (SSO), acting on the case brought last June by the musicians of the SSO, members of the American Federation of Musicians, Local 171. A trial date has been scheduled for May 9, 2023 in Boston. The NLRB found this time that the SSO had compounded its earlier violations by unilaterally breaking off contract negotiations on the false premise that there was no more room to negotiate. The SSO then improperly imposed employment terms upon its musicians. Read the Complaint.
MOSSO Update 11/29/2022: Danny Boyle, who was the longtime Box Office manager for the Springfield Symphony Orchestra, recently suffered a devastating electrical fire at his newly renovated mobile home. MOSSO will be contributing to this GoFundMe campaign to help Danny in his time of need. We hope you will, too.
MOSSO Update 11/4/2022: On his radio/TV program ArtsBeat today, Mark Auerbach (MOSSO Marketing and PR Director) revealed that he is seeking an organ donor. During Mark’s interview of Patrick Berry (MassAppeal), Mark announced that he is in need of a kidney. Click here to watch and listen to the program. If you or someone you know would like to donate a kidney to Mark, go to Massachusetts General Hospital. For more information on kidney donations and transplants, go to National Kidney Foundation. Mark has contributed his time, energy, experience, and love of the arts to MOSSO for which we cannot thank him enough. We love you, Mark, and hope that you’ll receive a kidney soon!
MOSSO Update 11/1/2022: The Musicians of the Springfield Symphony Orchestra, despite not having reached a new contractual agreement with the SSO, agreed to play an abbreviated 2022-2023 season. This unfortunate situation arose because the SSO had broken off contract talks with our Orchestra Committee in June of this year. The Musicians have urged the SSO Board to return to the table in order to reach a new multi-year agreement. The SSO can only chart a vibrant future with such an agreement in place.
MOSSO players are proud members of Local 171, American Federation of Musicians. Local 171 does not administer nor fund MOSSO.
